INFLUENCES ON/ PLANNING OF MAGAZINE - UPDATED

Drafting of my magazine front page, contents page and double page spread

The photos that I was planning to use for my magazine front page are as followed:

The reason why I refused to use this image at the end was because the lightening wasn’t perfect around the hair area so it was hard for me to crop out the background. I wanted to crop out the background and add the photo on a white background because the image is already dark so it makes the image stand out if it was in a clear and bright background rather than a dark background.

If I had used this image, I would’ve put waves of circles like this:

This design suits the name of my magazine and will make the magazine look extreme and exciting to read because of the facial expression of the model (who is screaming).

In addition, not only was it hard to crop out the model’s hair from the background but the colour of the model’s stomach looks dark on the image. This shows that the lightening didn’t reach that area so it wasn’t a good image to use.  If I got closer to the light or got the model closer to the light then it would’ve change everything and made the image brighter and clearer so that dark areas are avoided and the image would be easier to crop out from the background.

Moreover, for my front page I wanted to have female models as a main cover image.  I liked the fact that I got the models to wear sunglasses, big jackets and miniskirts because this represents the stereotype of hip hop and RnB fashion. If this was a front cover image it will give people the thoughts of this magazine being aimed at females interested in hip hop or RnB.

The reason why I didn’t use this image is because the area where I circled in red isn’t focussed. It’s very blurry and has affected the whole image, if I had stayed still and changed the focus of the camera by not zooming in but by moving closer to the models then the focus would’ve been clearer.
Ciara is a well-known hip hop/ RnB artist, so when I was taking the photo-shoot, I had her image in my head for a front page cover, and that was to have someone who is slim, wearing glasses and has weave on so that it’s more appealing to my audience.

Finally, when I decided that I didn’t have the right female model(s) for my front page, I chose to do something different and have a male front page model. This was why I done another photo-shoot and have a male dressed up like a hip hop artist with headphones on and a colourful top, instead of wearing shades so that he can represent hip hop on the front page of my magazine.

For my tittle, I planned to have:
SCREAM
WAVE
BEATS
RHYTHM
SOUNDS
FUNKY MONKEY (with a monkey instead of an “O” IN MONKEY)
I was wishing to download the fonts online but I thought I would be a mission to do so and I will find it difficult so I chose to pick wave and edit the font on Photoshop. I wanted to do funky monkey but people around didn’t find that exciting as a title because “having a monkey instead of an o looks like a children’s magazine”.

I also planned to make my own headphones on Photoshop to fill up empty spaces on my magazine and make my magazine look more musical than fashionable.

The images I planned to use on my contents page are as followed:

Hip hop includes breakdancing; this was why I wanted to get the theme of breakdancing into my contents page as this image wouldn’t look that attractive on my front page.

Moreover, when trying to decide where this image will looked great when it is edited. I couldn’t find an ideal position for this image so ended up not adding it in my final draft ad product.

If my model had moved up on the table a bit more, and I only got a shot of the table and the, and the plain background as well as the model then this image would’ve looked more professional because then it wouldn’t look like he is on a table but he is on the floor but I had to zoom out to get at least one leg so that it’s obvious he is doing a breakdance move.

I the then thought that it would be a good idea to have photos of more than one model in them so that my magazine looks like there is a lot inside rather than having single model photos and ending up having less space for more models. This was why I planned to have photos such as the ones below, with the help of my research to help me figure out how I am going to get the models to sit down so it looks more appealing to my audience.

RnB and Hip Hop artist tend to show legs and wear heels. This was why I got the models to wear miniskirts and look flirtatious.

Moreover, I also chose this image because having only females isn’t attractive for all my audience; it also makes the contents page stand out if I add it. This was why I decided to make this enlarged and eye catching to my audience when they view my contents page. In addition, I had to crop out another model that was in this image because he didn’t look like he was with the rest of the models in the image; he looked like he was standing alone.

I planned to make it look like the they were a group singers but the one who looked far apart wanted to do a solo so it looks like a topic for my magazine, but then there wasn’t any room for him in the contents page so had to stick to a simple image and crop him out.

I wanted a topic like that in my contents page because when I was doing research with my audience, I found out that they liked gossip and interesting updates and facts. So having a topic like this will make my magazine more appealing.

The area of which the red rectangle is placed is where the model’s right arm was and where I had cropped it off to be edited and placed on my contents page.

Colours
For the colours of texts and designs on my contents page, I chose:
White, BLUE, PURPLE and BLACK
(I chose to have these colours because not only do they combine together with my photos but it isn’t too famine nor masculine so it can appeal to both my male and female target groups.)

I also chose to have:
White, ORANGE, YELLOW, and BLACK
Because it suits my genre of music and combines together but the downside to it is that it clashed with my photos and images which I planned to use

The images I planned to use on my double page spread are as followed:
I got the look of these models from the internet:

I searched hip hop style on Google as I didn’t have a specific idea on how to make my models look like they are hip hop and RnB artist.

The reason why I wanted to have these models on my front page was because they attract both my female and male audience because the models are both male and female and it will look attracting to both genders.

Colours: I decided that having bright colours in my double page spread will make it more attractive an interesting to read as it is the most brightest page, and it’s the page with the most writing so having dark backgrounds and images wouldn’t make the reading any interesting or eye catching to my audience.
I chose to pick the colours out of the models and to also crop out the background of the original images and place it onto a white, light grey or bright blue background.

Influences on Double page spread

I did a few research to help me with how I can create my double page spread then I came across this. This gave me an idea to have a large picture of the model in the foerground, with a sequence of black and white images of the same model in the background but smaller. Like this:
